Immunologic Causes: Antibody Resistance to Botox

The most recognized medical reason Botox may stop lasting is the formation of neutralizing antibodies. In a small percentage of patients, the immune system recognizes the toxin as a foreign protein and produces antibodies that partially or completely block its effect. When this occurs, patients may notice:

• Shorter duration of results

• Weaker muscle relaxation

• Eventual lack of response despite correct dosing

Factors That Increase the Risk of Antibody Formation

• Using higher doses per session

• Undergoing “booster” injections between standard treatments
